Who am I

Janice Horoschak is a Maryland-based mixed media artist and founder of Abstract Janice, a woman-owned creative studio. A Maryland native and graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Janice balances a dual passions as a higher-education learning designer by day and a studio artist by night.

Her main body of work transforms her original ink-on-paper paintings into lightweight mixed media wearable art inspired by explosive color, infinite patterning, unpredictable line movement, and the textures found in nature. Janice’s artistic philosophy embraces serendipity and process-driven discovery, allowing the inherent qualities of materials and mark-making to guide the evolution of each piece.

Through decades of exploration with paper, Janice developed a signature three-step process that begins with gestural ink techniques on polypropylene paper, followed by precision cutting, resin inlay, and hand-applied resin finishing. The result is a collection of functional, sculptural wearable artworks that blur the boundaries between painting, craft, and adornment.

Drawn to wearable art since childhood, Janice began creating pieces for herself and friends before developing a refined and prolific body of work for a broader audience. She is inspired by the intimate relationship between art and adornment, where the wearer becomes an active participant in sharing the work with the world. While paper remains central to her practice, she continues to experiment with creative reuse materials such as natural objects, X-ray film, and other unconventional elements.

Janice is particularly driven by the moment of discovery when viewers realize that her vibrant, sculptural pieces are made from paper. These moments of surprise, curiosity, and connection reinforce her commitment to creating truly one-of-a-kind works that invite both personal expression and shared wonder.
